In Oakham School’s latest instalment of ‘Behind the BTEC’, Form 6 pupil Mollie gives her perspective on why a BTEC double award in Sports Science is helping her achieve her goals.
Why did you choose to do a BTEC?
“I chose to do the BTEC because I felt like I could go into Sports Science in more detail. Because it’s an extended BTEC which counts for two qualifications I thought this was a really good way for me to focus on this subject more.”
“I feel like because you get all of this extra detail and get a broader look at a subject, this will benefit me more if it’s something I want to pursue after school.”
Alongside her Sports Science BTEC, Mollie is also doing A-level Biology and Geography.
What made you want to do a BTEC?
“I hadn’t really thought about doing a BTEC and I hadn’t heard much about it before, but once the School made me aware of this option I feel like I leant towards this way of learning more than A-levels. I feel like the learning style suited me better.”
How do you think your BTEC supports your way of learning?
“I struggle with exams and revision and I feel like the assignments you do in a BTEC are good for me because I feel like I have more control over my grades and what I can contribute to more than in an exam. It’s much more hands on and I feel like I can prepare for it a lot better than going into an exam and not knowing what questions I’ll get asked.”
“Exams can become a stressful time and because I’m taking two A-levels alongside my BTEC this gives me the best of both worlds and spreads out what I need to focus on rather than having all of my exams at once.”
What is your favourite thing about the Sports Science BTEC?
“We see each other so much as a set because we have 12 lessons a week, so you get to know everyone in your classes really well and you feel like you’re always supported.”
“I really like learning about Anatomy and Physiology and finding out more about how muscles and bones work because it’s really interesting. Our Sports Science teacher is really good as well, because she knows how to teach to suit everyone’s different learning styles and make sure we’re all getting the most out of our classes. You learn so much doing the Sports Science BTEC.”
What do you hope to do when you leave School?
“I’m not 100% sure what I want to do in the future yet, but I know that the Sports Science BTEC will support me. I’m kind of leaning towards Physiotherapy as a potential career path but I’m still deciding on this.”
How does a BTEC help prepare you for the future?
“The assignments we do in the BTEC course are really good at helping me prepare for when I go to university because a lot of work there is assignment-led and it’s a style that you have to get used to. I feel like this qualification is a really good preparation that provides a bridge between School and university.”
