Four Oakhamians recently competed in the prestigious England Hockey Futures Cup and are celebrating after being ranked highly among their teams.
Seen as the pinnacle of the England Hockey’s Player Pathway, it was a fantastic achievement for pupils Daisy, Violet, Immi and Evelyn to be selected to play in the four-day competition. Making the squads puts the girls in the top 60 players of their age group nationally.
The Futures Cup was held in St Albans took place between 25 and 28 August. Daisy played for the Mercia Lynx (U15) coming 4th, Violet and Immi played for the Mercia Lynx (u17) which came 6th and Evelyn won Bronze with her team the Pennine Pumas (U15).
Director of Hockey James Bateman said: “We are so very proud of the girls for competing in the wonderful Futures Cup. This is a fantastic achievement for them all and to be ranked in the top 60 players of their age group is outstanding.
“It was great to go down to support the girls in close games and see them representing the School with such professionalism and team spirit. Competing in national tournaments such as this really gives the girls a chance to shine and seeing all of their hard work pay off is fantastic to witness.”
At the Future Cup, each age group is split into four squads of 20 players – the Mercia Lynx, Pennine Pumas, Saxon Tigers and Wessex Leopards. The squads took part in two days of intensive training before going into a four-day tournament against each other and teams from Scotland and Wales. The National Age Group Coaches also attended this tournament to select for the England U16 and U18 squads.
