We were delighted to hold our inaugural Oakham School Carol Composition Competition for our pupils this November. We were impressed with the creativity shown by the entrants and we look forward to showcasing recordings of the compositions in due course.
Ben in Form 7 was announced as winner of the competition for his setting of the Wexford Carol. Ben’s composition stood out for its secure understanding of the choral carol genre, with an original folk-style melody arranged attractively for four part choir and organ. The carol will feature in our recorded Carols and Readings for Christmas 2020, performed by the Chamber Choir.
The runner-up prize was awarded to Baker in Lower 1. Baker composed a really joyful melody setting his own text, full of uplifting Christmas imagery. Look out for Baker’s carol Christmas Time which will be shared on Twitter and on the music department Facebook page as part of our Christmas countdown!
Joshua (Form 4) crafted a very original hymn-style setting of the Sussex Carol in a fully-formed arrangement. His composition was Highly Commended by the adjudicators and will also be shared as part of our virtual Christmas countdown.
We would also like to extend our congratulations to Matthew (Form 6) and Alan (Form 6) whose entries were Commended by the judges.
Congratulations to the prize winners and all those who entered the competition. If you’d like to hear recordings of the carols, be sure to follow us on Twitter (@OakhamSch) and Facebook (/OakhamSchoolMusic).
