Oakham School’s Language Faculty has relaunched its Language Society for the new year.
The launch event was the first of the Upper School’s Torch Lectures – a new series of evening academic enrichment lectures for Form 6 and 7 pupils.
The aim was to bring together Upper School linguists and to introduce them to the non-linguistic advantages and joys of learning a foreign language, incentivising the continuation of foreign language learning into the future.
Following a brief address by Head of Languages Mr Ed Milner – citing Winston Churchill’s view that to learn another language is to provide pleasure and relaxation – the pupils enjoyed international food tasting, cultural quizzes and some popular European music.
An impressive turnout of close to 60 pupils studying Oakham School’s full range of languages made the most of the enjoyable hour and a half whilst contributing to a great atmosphere.
