Music at Lunchtime: Sublime Saxophone recital

This week’s Music at Lunchtime recital was given by music exhibitioner George in Form 6, who performed on both the soprano and alto saxophone, accompanied by Cason Kang.

Beginning on the soprano saxophone, George started his programme with Voyage – A concerto for Soprano Saxophone by Charlotte Harding. His interpretation effectively highlighted the contrasting styles of the two movements. The rhythmic precision of Open Waters and the lyrical quality of Too Far from Home were conveyed with clear dynamic control and thoughtful attention to the musical narrative.

Switching seamlessly to the alto saxophone, George’s performance of Paquito captured the vibrant energy and rhythmic drive of Andy Scott’s homage to composer/saxophonist Paquito D’Rivera, delivering the intricate syncopated rhythm with precision and flair. In contrast, Ballade for Alto Saxophone was rendered with sensitivity, demonstrating the lyrical lines and delicate balance between the saxophone and piano, bringing out the rich harmonic colours of Alfred Reed’s composition.

Congratulations to George on an impressive performance!

Next week’s Music at Lunchtime concert will be given by Form 5 pupil Ottó and Form 6 pupil Alexa, who will be performing music for trombone by Irving Berlin, César Franck, John Greenwood & George Michael.
