Another Inspiring Art Trip to Cambridge
Form 6 A-level art pupils kickstarted their coursework project with a trip to Cambridge on the 29th and 30th September. Our Director of Art, Mrs Brass, speaks more on the inspiring trip.
“Our first stop was the University Botanical Gardens which gave pupils the opportunity to take photos, make drawings and explore. After that, we moved into the city centre where we developed drawings in response to the built environment, as well as considering the vibrancy of the space on a busy day in Cambridge.
The pupils were also set some fun, creative challenges to provoke a new way to explore the city, encouraging them to begin thinking about their own interests as artists. After some delicious pizzas, the pupils continued to make things in the evening, working in a studio space to create drawings and collages that pushed some of their imagery and ideas.
The following day we started at Kettle’s Yard, which is part of the University of Cambridge. Kettle’s Yard is a house that was donated to the University in 1966 and which was the home of Jim Ede. Ede was a curator at the Tate Gallery and had a remarkable collection of paintings which he displayed carefully in his house. The house remains unchanged with artworks and beautiful objects throughout. It is a wonderful, inspiring space and the pupils spent time exploring the rooms with artist Damaris Athene, taking photos and making drawings.
They also visited the exhibition in the main gallery space by painter Megan Rooney, which allowed chance to consider how to respond to memories through art making. Damaris led a brilliant session for the rest of the morning, which got the students thinking about colour, memory and place moving from drawing, into textiles and then into a collaborative installation.
The final afternoon of the trip, pupils had time to follow up with their ideas prior to making the trip home.”
