This week’s Music at Lunchtime recital featured Form 5 pupil Ottó and Form 6 pupil Alexa, both performing music for trombone, accompanied by the Head of Piano, Anne Bolt.
Alexa opened the programme with three well-known pieces, though not typically associated with the trombone. The first was Panis Angelicus, in which the trombone imparted a mellow tone to the usually high-pitched melody. This was followed by Moon River, where Alexa’s graceful interpretation transported the audience to a serene and reflective atmosphere. She concluded her performance with Let’s Face the Music and Dance, which enlivened the audience, many of whom were tapping their feet to the lively rhythm.
Ottó then continued the programme, beginning with Bone Idyll, a light-hearted piece whose title gives a hint of its playful character. For a change of pace, he followed with a trombone arrangement of George Michael’s classic Careless Whisper, evoking a sense of nostalgia and almost inviting the audience to sing along. To conclude the recital, Ottó performed The Acrobat, a rite of passage for trombonists, which allowed him to explore the full range of glissandi, demonstrating the instrument’s versatility.
