This week’s Music at Lunchtime recital featured a compelling performance of Edvard Grieg’s Violin Sonata No. 2 in G major, Op. 13, played by Evie (F7) on violin with Anne Bolt accompanying on piano. This lively and expressive work blends Norwegian folk influences with moments of deep emotion, reflecting both Grieg’s national pride and personal joy.
The first movement Lento doloroso – Allegro vivace opened with a sombre introduction before giving way to a spirited and dance-like section. Evie captured the shift in mood effectively, moving between the dramatic opening and the energetic themes that followed. The second movement Allegretto tranquillo provided a gentler contrast, with its song-like melodies performed with warmth and sensitivity. The final movement Allegro animato was full of energy, with both performers maintaining a lively pace and bringing the sonata to a rousing close.
Grieg composed this sonata during his honeymoon in 1867, and its folk-inspired melodies reflect both his happiness and his love for Norwegian culture. The piece also hints at the country’s growing sense of national identity, with echoes of the Hardanger fiddle’s rich, resonant sound woven throughout.
Evie’s performance highlighted the expressive range of the sonata, from the darker, dramatic passages to the bright folk dance rhythms. Her clear tone and confident playing were well-matched by Anne Bolt’s sensitive accompaniment, making for an engaging and enjoyable recital.
