This week’s Music at Lunchtime recital featured a varied and engaging programme performed by Rosie on the piano. Her selection of works spanned Classical elegance, Impressionist beauty, and the rhythmic vitality of jazz and folk-inspired music.
The recital opened with Debussy’s Clair de Lune, one of the most evocative pieces of the Impressionist repertoire. Rosie captured its flowing lines with a gentle touch, allowing the music’s quiet radiance to unfold naturally. The shift to Mozart’s Sonata No. 10 in C major brought a welcome contrast, its Allegro moderato movement full of charm and clarity. The light, ornamented phrases and carefully shaped dynamics highlighted the sonata’s playful character.
A change of atmosphere followed with Ginastera’s Danza de la moza donosa, a work infused with Argentine folk influences. Rosie navigated its haunting melody and harmonically rich textures with poise, bringing out the contrast between its delicate opening and more dramatic central section. The recital concluded with Gershwin’s I Got Rhythm, a lively and technically demanding showpiece. The syncopated rhythms and bold harmonies were delivered with confidence, bringing an energetic close to the performance.
This was a well-constructed and beautifully performed programme. Rosie’s sensitive playing brought out the distinct character of each piece.
Our next Music at Lunchtime recital will be on Wednesday 26 March 2025 and feature Form 7 pupil Eloise performing a recital of musical theatre solos.
