We are proud of our longstanding connection with families from the Armed Forces and are delighted to offer a Forces Bursary scheme to provide additional financial support for children of serving members of the armed forces, helping them to achieve continuity throughout their child’s education.
Boarding Life
Children from the age of 11 can join our vibrant boarding community to enjoy all the opportunities on offer at Oakham School. Our homely Boarding Houses, run by teams of experienced and caring staff, provide a stable and secure environment in which children from service families can thrive. We use our extensive experience in welcoming children from the UK and around the world to help your child settle quickly into School life, make friends and feel at home.
Connection to Family
Children can choose to visit family and friends over the weekends, and parents are welcome to visit whenever possible. We recognise that serving personnel may not be able to visit at regular intervals and are very happy to accommodate you coming to school at a time that works for you. We have several Leave Out Weekends over the year, providing another opportunity for children to visit friends and family.
Lotte’s Story
“I’ll always think of Oakham as my home”
With her family in the military, former pupil Lotte moved around a lot when growing up and found stability in boarding at Oakham School.
Born in Scotland, Lotte joined as a full boarder in Lower 1 (Year 6) and has enjoyed the variety, friendships and on-site support network during her time at school.

Military Family Fees
We are pleased to offer our Forces Funding Scheme to families in receipt of the Continuity of Education Allowance (CEA) from the Ministry of Defence. Based on current termly fees and CEA, this works out as follows for all ages:
Boarding Fees for Military Families – £11,346
Covered by Continuity of Education Allowance – £10,211
Payable by Family – £1,135
Applying for a Place
We have limited availability each year for our Forces Funding Scheme, so families are encouraged to contact us for a discussion as early as possible. We warmly invite you to visit our campus and get to know our friendly staff and pupils. Once you are ready to make an application, we will guide you and your child through the process step by step, including conducting the assessments and interview remotely if appropriate. Once an offer of a place is made, we ask you to pay an acceptance deposit of £1,000 to secure your child’s place.
