Black History Month

09th November 2023

Form 7 pupil Zeme speaks on behalf of the Oakham School Racial Diversity group to share how the pupils led a series of activity throughout October to celebrate Black History Month:

It was recently Black History Month, and to celebrate this, the Racial Diversity Group did several things to raise awareness for the month and encourage the embrace of it.

We kicked of the month by hanging posters of notable black influences throughout all facets of life, from work hard quotes from Muhammed Ali to fun quotes from Bob Marley. These posters were our first effort to introduce Oakhamians to the month this school year.

We then held numerous talks to different year groups about black history.

We gave a speech to form 2 about the impact of black people in different aspects of life during their assembly. Talks were also given to lower, middle, and upper school about Black History Month during chapel services, this year highlighting black influence on music.

We then ended the month with a Black History Month inspired lunch with foods from Black African, Black Caribbean and Black American cultures.
