Oakham School’s campus, facilities and support staff have experienced a very busy summer hosting guests from around the world.
The School’s commercial arm, Oakham School Enterprises, exists to help utilise the School’s impressive facilities by providing top-level venue space to a wide range of organisations during school holidays.
This summer has seen 20,000 bed nights provided and 45,000 meals served.
Around 1,400 overseas language students stayed at the School, enjoying the quintessentially English setting of Oakham and making use of the School’s Boarding Houses and classrooms.
July saw thousands of ornithologists from around the world descend upon Oakham for the Global Birdfair at the Rutland Showground. The School provided bed & breakfast accommodation for the event, as well as shuttle bus transport to and from the showground.
Also in July, first class cricket returned to Oakham School as the Doncaster Close ground saw Leicestershire host Worcestershire in an LV= Insurance County Championship fixture.
August saw 1,000 young footballers stay at Oakham School to take part in a series of tournaments organised by Specialist Soccer, run by award winning Manchester United youth coach Tom Statham.
Boys and girls of various age groups played in the tournaments, representing clubs such as Arsenal, West Ham, Aston Villa, Brighton and Leicester City. As well as domestic giants, teams also attended from Scotland, USA, Canada, Ireland and Northern Ireland.
Speaking about the busy summer at the School, Chief Operating Officer William Hawkes described it as “effectively a fourth term”, and paid tribute to the efforts of the School’s support staff.
He added that the summer events “give a whole group of people the opportunity to experience Oakham School and its wonderful facilities.”
