Celebrating our Athletes this Spring Term

Steve May, Director of Sport, reflects on the achievements of Oakham’s athletes and shares the highlights from Spring Term 2025.

Netball Highlights

Friday Night Lights for International Women’s Day
Oakham and Stamford netball teams came together under the floodlights for a fantastic evening of entertainment, celebrating International Women’s Day. The thrilling contest ended in a well-earned 34-34 draw, showcasing great sportsmanship and skill from both teams. 

U19 Nationals Netball Finals
Congratulations to our 1st VII for battling through county and regional rounds to qualify for the U19 Nationals Netball Finals and show incredible courage and determination throughout the competition.

A special mention to Betsy H, who has been representing Birmingham Panthers, and Izzy N, who has been playing for Nottingham Forest and Scotland. Both have impressively balanced their franchise commitments alongside representing the School.


Rugby 7s

Oakham Rugby 7s Tournament – A Record-Breaking Event!
The Oakham Rugby 7s Tournament saw a record-breaking 47 teams compete, including U14, U16, and U18 girls’ teams. An incredible event with over 110 matches and 16,000 livestream views, making it the biggest yet!

Success at Gresham’s 7s
The U14 boys claimed the U14 Plate title, while the U16 boys secured a 21-7 win in the final against Bedford, securing the Cup!

Trophies Keep Rolling In!
Our U18 and U16 girls’ teams put in outstanding performances at the Northampton Saints Community 7s. Congratulations to our U16s, who came out on top to win the Cup.

Our U16 girls continued their impressive run at Rosslyn Park, finishing in the top 4 out of 48 schools – a remarkable result.


Rugby Union

Rugby Representative Honours 
Congratulations to Will C, Will L, Marcus S, Henry J and Roman P on representing Leicester Tigers U17 & U18.

Marcus S and Henry J played a key role in the U18 Premiership Academies Cup victory, contributing to a memorable win.

James F and Noah H have proudly represented Northampton Saints U17, showcasing their talent at a high level.

At U16 level, Mackinley J, Charlie L, Ivan K, and Otto S have been selected for the Leicester Tigers U16 Junior Academy Pathway, a fantastic step in their development. 

Lewis L and Charlie B represented Leicestershire U18, and Sam M featured for The Lambs, gaining valuable experience. 

International Call-Up
A special congratulations to Marcus S, whose hard work and dedication have been rewarded with a call-up to the England U17 squad, a truly well-deserved achievement!


Cross Country

Grit and Determination at the UK Inter-Counties Championships 
Will’s performance at the UK Inter-Counties Championships was remarkable, finishing 59th despite being spiked and losing a shoe. Meanwhile Beth showcased her strength and determination, finishing 2nd in the women’s race, just seven seconds off the leader.


Football

A Season of Progress and Commitment for Girls’ Football 
The girls’ team showed fantastic commitment through the season with a stunning 4-0 victory at King’s Ely and a thrilling 5-5 draw against Uppingham.

U18B Boys’ Football – Back-to-Back ISFA Mercian League Champions!
Our U18B boys successfully retained the ISFA Mercian League title, scoring an impressive 41 goals in the season. Will B claimed the Golden Boot with 13 goals, and Kaden E was named Player of the Season.

A Strong Season for the 1st XI Boys Football Team
The 1st XI had a commendable season, finishing a creditable 3rd place out of 10 teams in the Mercian League.

A special word of luck to Hugo N, who is trialling for the ISFA U17 Midlands squad at Uppingham School during the Easter holidays.


Hockey

Quarter-Finalists in the U16 National Cup

The Girls’ U16s reached the quarter-finals of the Tier 1 National Cup. They secured a 4-1 win at home against GSAL in the last 16, with goals from Federica P, Libby H, and two from Polly K. The team then travelled to Surbiton High for the quarter-final, where they narrowly lost 1-0 – a testament to the outstanding effort from everyone involved.

U13A Boys’ and Girls’ Teams Shine at Regional Finals
Both the U13A Boys’ and Girls’ teams achieved a fantastic achievement, securing 3rd place at the Regional Finals, a testament to their hard work and skill.

Individual Representative Honours
Alexa B received her first-team national league debut for Beeston HC whilst also earning an England U18 trial, great work and fully deserved.

Felix F was selected for a Switzerland U21 training camp after being promoted from the U18 squad; a fantastic achievement, playing two age brackets above his own.

Anabelle R represented City of Peterborough HC in the U14 Tier 2 Cup national semi-final.

Libby H, Lucy C, Hester M, Phillipa D represented Beeston HC in Tier 1 Cup.


Tennis

LTA National Championships Victory

Our tennis team triumphed in the LTA National Championships 1st round with an 8-4 win over Leicester Grammar School, with Jamie A and Ivan K dominating their singles matches (6-2, 6-2).


Golf

National Plate Success and Strong Performances Continue
The golf team secured a fantastic win in the National Plate Quarter-Final against Wellingborough, earning a place in the Semi-Finals this May.

Strong Performance at the Lincolnshire Invitational 
The 1st team put in an excellent performance at the Lincolnshire Invitational, securing a well-earned 2nd place overall. A standout individual effort from Fred C, who finished in 2nd place after shooting a superb round of 82 on the challenging Bracken Course at Woodhall Spa.


Eton Fives

A Season of Admirable Performances
This year saw admirable performances against Repton, Uppingham, and Shrewsbury, with players demonstrating skill, determination, and sportsmanship throughout.

A special mention to Lena C and Freddie J, who remained unbeaten during the Triangular Fixture, showcasing their outstanding skill and determination.


Lacrosse

1st Team Victory
The 1st team secured a hard-fought 4-3 victory against a strong Uppingham side, who were preparing for the Nationals. The team showed great skill and commitment and Sae H’s exceptional goalkeeping, while Captain Amelia A led by example – great teamwork!


Shooting

NLRTSA Junior Championship 2025
Isla M claimed 1st place at the Northamptonshire, Leicestershire, and Rutland Target Shooting Association (NLRTSA) Junior Championship, with Evie D finishing 2nd and Henry F securing 3rd, an impressive podium sweep for Oakham.

United Kingdom Cadet Target Rifle Team (UKCRT) Selection 2025
Congratulations to Henry F, who has been selected to attend Ex Maple Taste during the Easter break. A remarkable opportunity and a testament to his dedication to the sport. 


Cricket

Leicestershire CCC Selections
