A new composition by Old Oakhamian, Morgan (18), will be sending a message of hope to BBC Radio 3 audiences as part of the BBC’s ‘Culture in Quarantine’ arts festival.
“We will all be tuning in to the broadcast on Radio 3’s breakfast show this Friday at 8.30am,” says Director of Music, Peter Davis. “It will be wonderful to hear Morgan’s latest composition, along with the rest of the nation. The ‘Culture in Quarantine’ initiative is an inspiring festival of the arts to lift the spirits of a nation in lockdown, and we are very proud that Morgan was chosen to make a creative contribution.”
Morgan is one of twenty composers who have been commissioned to write 30-second pieces for solo instrumentalists drawn from the BBC Orchestras. Alan Davey, Controller, BBC Radio 3 says: “With Postcards from Composers, we are showcasing and supporting the breadth and creativity of the contemporary British composing scene, at the same time giving our audiences a short daily moment of hope, as news comes in and lots of people in lockdown turn to classical music in search of relief.”
Morgan’s work will feature alongside representatives of a wide variety of musical genres, including established artists such as celebrated Radiohead guitarist-turned-composer Jonny Greenwood and Grammy-nominated Anna Clyne. Morgan is one of two BBC Young Composer alumni to be included in this prestigious line-up of composers.
Morgan won the UK’s leading event for young composers, the BBC Proms Inspire Competition, whilst he was a 16-year-old Music Scholar at Oakham. His composition was featured at the BBC Proms and broadcast on BBC Radio 3, and he also received a much-coveted BBC commission. During his time at Oakham he also won the Britten Young Songwriter Competition twice (in 2013 and 2014), the highly regarded Royal Opera House Fanfare Competition in 2014 and was selected as one of three finalists in the MMA Amadeus Composition Competition in 2016.
