Doc Soc Students Build Lego for Interview Preparation
As this year’s UCAS cycle draws to a close, the final, formal meeting for Form 7 clinical course applicants took place in the Wolfson Laboratory, a familiar home to the Doc Soc group for the past 12 months of their preparation.
With a waiting area outside, Wo1 was the perfect venue for practising role playing and multi-tasking. Under timed conditions, pairs of pupils took it in turns to act out the role of either ‘leader’ (such as a GP or vet) or ‘participant’ (patient or client) using scenarios given them by Dr Nicoll. Although not all the scenarios are clinical, many examples were, involving breaking bad news to a worried patient or devoted pet owner.
The second half of the session was devoted to multi-tasking – applicants had to ‘build a Lego rocket’ or construct an ‘amino acid’ whilst discussing the nurse Lucy Letby case or their greatest achievement. This is made all the harder because they are expected to maintain eye contact with their partner, and the success of each ‘station’ is decided by the accuracy of the ‘product’ presented to the observer.
The current group has already obtained an impressive number of invitations to interviews which are now taking place at various universities across the country, and will continue to do so over coming months. It is equally impressive that offers for university courses are also starting to be made to the candidates from Oakham School, and we wish all applicants the best of luck in their endeavours.
