The Modern Foreign Languages Faculty is delighted to announce that two Oakhamians, Grace (Form 3) and Hattie (Form 6) have been recognised by Oxford University for their entries in the Anthea Bell Translation Competition, run by Queen’s College, Oxford.
In French, Hattie entered the top tier of the competition as part of her extension work outside class. Hattie hopes to study French at university, possibly at Oxford itself, and she was doubly delighted to receive an award. The highest tier involved the translation of a metaphorical narrative; a difficult task, but one in which Hattie showed her considerable linguistic qualities. Hattie has also recently become DELF (Diplôme d’Etudes en Langue Française) certified.
In Spanish, Grace was commended by the university for her stylish translation of a comic sketch, a major achievement for a relative beginner with only 4 full terms of teaching.
Head of Languages Mr Ed Milner said, “To have two winners is excellent news, particularly when there were 14000 high quality entrants, and the competition was strong. For Form 3, the Faculty ran internal competitions in French, German and Spanish, and selected 5 to send off to the Anthea Bell competition. For one of those Form 3 entries to be a winner is a fantastic accomplishment. Well done Grace and Hattie.”
