The last ‘Kitchen Chemistry’ session of the term saw pupils set up a couple of fun experiments for testing over Easter.
The first experiment aims to test phototropism. Pupils made a box maze to test out a plant’s ability to grow around obstacles to reach the light.
The second scientific activity set up involves using an acid and base reaction to dissolve the shell of an egg.
During the Chemistry session pupils also found out about expanding gases by making some explosive popcorn and carried out a few taste tests too.
Over the last couple of weeks, the young scientists have also been busy making mayonnaise emulsion and denatured meringues. They even had a bathroom bonus week, which included homemade bath bombs and an investigation into the chemistry of nappies, not to mention growing sugar crystals and making ice cream!
Head of Chemistry, Jo Griffiths said, “The Kitchen Chemistry sessions have been great fun, with lots of fantastic tasting experiments and some science learnt along the way too. I hope the pupils helped with all the washing up!”
