Form 5 Citizenship pupils enjoyed an action-packed and informative day in London visiting Parliament and Europe House, to help them with their GCSE exam preparation.
Pupils began their trip to the Capital by visiting Europe House. Here they were welcomed by Asher Jacobsberg of Involver for a 2-hour workshop looking at the structure of the EU and the UK’s post-Brexit relationship – a popular topic on Paper 3 of the GCSE exam. Students got involved in debate on the key issues and were not short of opinions.
The Citizenship pupils then travelled to the Houses of Parliament for a tour and workshop. Viv Lamb, Head of Citizenship, said: “We had chosen our tour of Parliament on a Wednesday as it is more active around Prime Minister’s questions and fortunately both the House of Commons and the Lords were sitting.
“The timing of our visit was particularly good, as the Commons were making a key statement on the agreement to get the Northern Ireland Assembly back into operation. As a result, there was a real buzz of energy about the place and lots of opportunity for the pupils to see Parliament in action.”
The tour was followed by an interactive workshop reviewing how Parliament makes laws and then a meeting with our local MP Alicia Kearns who kindly gave of her time to answer questions and discuss key topics with students.
Viv said: “The trip to London was a great success, with our students gathering some great material for their exam.
“We are very grateful to all those who gave their time to make it such an informative and action-packed day including our minibus drivers who helped it all run so seamlessly.”
Two days later, Alicia Kearns MP visited Oakham School to run a workshop with Upper School MUN and Politics students.
