The Careers department recently hosted a Higher Education Fair in the Library. This is the first time that we have been able to hold the event since the outbreak of Covid-19 and it was fantastic to welcome universities back to the School and to see so many students making the most of this opportunity to explore their post-Oakham options.
A total of twenty-five universities and organisations attended in order to meet with our students. These included ‘traditional’ UK universities which are highly targeted by graduate employers, including those at Nottingham, Warwick, York, Exeter and Sheffield, and specialist institutions such as Oxford Media and Business School.
Those planning to study beyond the UK were able to speak with representatives from Universita Bocconi in Milan, the University of British Columbia and EHL, which offers hospitality and business courses in Switzerland. The organisations Burnett Global Education, The University Guys and A Star Future all also advised students on the many opportunities available in Europe and North America. We also know that some students are keen to get out into the workplace and balance qualifications with real-world experience, and ASK Apprenticeships were present to speak to those interested in that route.
The event was attended by students in Form 6, who will shortly began work on their university applications. Students in Form 5 were also welcome and many visited with a view to making a head start on their future planning. Some students in Form 7, currently weighing up university offers, also used the Fair as an opportunity to ask further questions about the institutions they are considering.
Rachael Pearson, Head of Careers and Progression, said that the event was ‘a fantastic opportunity for students to begin exploring the potential paths they could take following their time at Oakham’ and that ‘it was wonderful to be able to hold events like this in person again’. Form 6 students will continue to consider future routes over the rest of the term, for example through the ‘After Oakham’ day to be held on May 25th.
The Careers department works closely with students in all years and encourages them to get in touch if there is any aspect of their future planning they would like to discuss further.
