This week’s Music at Lunchtime concert was given by Form 7 pupil, Joshua, who performed the Strauss Horn Concerto No. 1 in E flat Major, op.11.
After the opening piano chords and a triumphant start by Joshua on the horn, the two instruments came together with a harmonious, heroic melody. Joshua conveyed his skill, confidence and command over his instrument in this difficult movement.
The second movement allowed the horn to shine with Joshua producing rich warm tones showing the beautiful melodic lines of the piece.
More triumphant, heroic horn playing heralded the start of the third movement. After this, Joshua had the opportunity to showcase his ensemble skills, as the horn and piano took turns playing the melody. This movement is also interspersed with some contemplative moments or lunga pausa, allowing him to give his horn the chance to sing. There is a final flourish from the horn at the end, and it allowed Joshua to once again show the command he has over his instrument. He did this by demonstrating the rapid finger movement that is needed for these fast passages.
Congratulations to Joshua for a superb recital, showcasing the horn’s versatility and range!
The recording from today’s concert is available online here.
Our pupils will be having our half term break for the next two weeks, however, there will be two organ recitals over this time.
