Music at Lunchtime: A Peaceful and Poised Piano Recital

This week’s Music at Lunchtime concert was given by Form 7 pupil, Sofia, performing music for solo piano. Sofia’s varied programme, which consisted of music by Mozart, Tchaikovsky, Debussy and Bartók delighted the audience.

Sofia began her programme with Mozart’s Sonata in F major, K. 332 and the light touch she brought to the Mozart was appreciated by all. Her second piece was Tchaikovsky’s June: Barcarolle, a ‘boat song’ from his piano works depicting the 12 months of the year. The melodic line at the start was reminiscent of a lullaby, in contrast to the triumphant chordal progressions in the middle of the piece, and Sofia played this piece with poise.

This was followed by Sofia’s favourite piece, Debussy’s La fille aux cheveux de lin in which she was able to demonstrate her delicate musicality and this beautiful rendition was most enjoyable. She finished off her recital with a complete contrast, Bartók’s last work of the Mikrokosmos collection Dance in Bulgarian Rhythm No. 6. Energetic repeated notes made this a fantastic piece to end on and her visible enjoyment while playing was a joy for the audience to see.

The recording from today’s concert is available online here.

Next week’s ‘Music at Lunchtime’ concert is a piano recital given by Form 4 pupil, Elsa.
