Music at Lunchtime: Completely out of hand(s)

This week’s Music at Lunchtime recital featured our talented Piano Faculty, Anne Bolt, Gregor Vidovic, Inga Liukaityte & Cason Kang, performing a selection of piano pieces for four to eight hands.

The programme, a showcase of ensemble creativity, brought together our piano teachers in a celebration of collaborative performance.

The recital began with J.S. Bach’s Gottes Zeit ist die allerbeste Zeit, BWV 106:2a, arranged by György Kurtág and performed by Inga Liukaityte and Anne Bolt. This thoughtful transcription retained the reverence and serenity of Bach’s cantata, with the duo seamlessly blending their touch and phrasing to evoke the timeless assurance of its title: “God’s time is the very best time.”

Cason Kang and Anne Bolt followed with Beethoven’s Sonata in D major, Op. 6, for piano four hands. This early work of Beethoven, though modest in scope, was brought to life with vivacity and charm. Their interplay highlighted the light-hearted elegance of the opening Allegro molto, while the Rondo shone with grace, showcasing the duo’s precision and dynamic balance.

One of the recital’s highlights was the performance of Sergei Rachmaninoff’s Romance in A major for six hands. Cason, Inga, and Anne shared the keyboard for this piece, creating a cohesive atmosphere that moved from gentle lyricism to rich, expressive textures.

The programme concluded with an exhilarating rendition of Albert Lavignac’s Galop-Marche. Anne Bolt, Gregor Vidovic, Inga Liukaityte, and Cason Kang took their places for this lighthearted and dazzling showcase for eight hands. The performance was a joyful spectacle of musical and spatial coordination, with the players navigating the shared keyboard with finesse and humour. The audience couldn’t help but be captivated by the infectious energy of this playful work, which truly embodied the spirit of collaboration.

Congratulations to our talented piano teachers for an afternoon of fun entertainment.
