Music at Lunchtime: Enchanting Recital

This week’s Music at Lunchtime recital featured Form 7 pupil Evie accompanied by Cason Kang. Evie presented a thoughtfully curated programme that spanned a range of musical styles and languages featuring music by Mozart, Debussy and Quilter.

Evie opened with Una donna a quindici anni from Mozart’s ‘Così fan tutte’. This lively aria was performed with charm and confidence, capturing the playful character of the young protagonist. Following this, she brought a sense of serenity to Mozart’s Agnus Dei from the ‘Coronation Mass’, allowing the lyrical lines to unfold with clarity and poise.

Debussy’s Romance provided a shift in mood, its delicate interplay between voice and piano reflecting the subtleties of love and longing. In Schubert’s Frühlingsglaube, Evie conveyed the optimism and warmth of spring. She shaped the phrases with sensitivity and an appreciation for the text’s imagery.

The recital concluded with Quilter’s Love’s Philosophy, a setting of Percy Bysshe Shelley’s poetry. Evie delivered the piece with fluidity and expressiveness, embracing the natural rise and fall of the melody. The joyful nature of the song provided a fitting close to a recital that balanced elegance, emotion, and technical refinement.

Evie’s performance demonstrated her keen interest in the relationship between text and music, as well as her ability to navigate different styles with ease. Her thoughtful approach to interpretation and clear engagement with the material ensured a rewarding experience for all in attendance.
