Music at Lunchtime: Musical Theatre Melodies

Our excellent Music at Lunchtime recital on Wednesday 24 January was given by Form 1 pupil, Safi, who performed a selection of Musical Theatre solos, accompanied by Head of Piano, Anne Bolt.

Safi opened her recital with the powerful and emotive Quiet from Matilda, carrying the audience to a place of introspection, reflecting on Matilda’s yearning for people to listen to each other and embrace understanding. Safi conveyed this gentle yet emotionally charged song with confidence, capturing Matilda’s character and inner desires. With a similar reflective nature, Safi moved on to the iconic song Over the Rainbow from The Wizard of Oz, transporting us to a land filled with hope and optimism.

In contrast to her first two songs, If only you would listen from School of Rock has an upbeat, powerful, and anthemic melody. Fused with frustration and longing from students who yearn to be understood, Safi delivered this song with passion and determination. Almost there from The Princess and the Frog followed, in which Safi enjoyed telling the story of Tiana searching for her dream in a spirited and uplifting delivery.

Finishing off with Popular from Wicked, Safi once again transported us to Oz, but this time with a lively and humorous outlook. Safi portrayed Glinda’s bubbly and charming personality excellently through this song as she shared tips for achieving social success.

Safi’s recital took the audience on a musical and emotional journey, moving the audience with great musicality and charisma.

The recording from this recital can be viewed online here.

Next week’s Music at Lunchtime concert will be given by George, who will be performing music for alto saxophone.
