Our first Music at Lunchtime recital of the Summer Term featured selected commended students from our recent piano duet competition. Six pairs of students performed a range of music for piano duet, showcasing pupils’ skills as pianists and ensemble musicians.
The six duets were all based on the theme of dance. Annie and Grace opened the recital with Rachmaninov’s sparkling arrangement of the popular Waltz from Tchaikovsky’s ballet Sleeping Beauty. Ibti and Sofia gave an atmospheric performance of Walton’s piano duet Ghosts, followed by Baker’s and Charlie’s performance of the bouncy jazz duet, Three to Go, by Mike Cornick. Hattie and Obi played Barber’s spacious ‘Pas de deux’ from his Souvenirs, with Millie and Faith following with Laideronette from Ravel’s La Mère l’Oye, an audience favourite from the duet repertoire. For a ferocious end to the concert, Charlie and Dozie performed Khachaturian’s Sabre Dance– a dramatic and finger-flying conclusion!
Congratulations to all our performers; alongside musical sensitivity and ensemble skills, working in a piano duet requires commitment and team-work- important skills all-round.
Next week’s Music at Lunchtime concert is given by Form 7 Music Scholar, Archie, who will be performing music for trombone by Boutry and David.
