This week’s Music at Lunchtime recital featured the exceptional talents of Eloise, whose stunning voice and unique tonal quality captivated the audience from start to finish. Presenting a programme of musical theatre repertoire, she brought to life a diverse array of female characters, each navigating their own journey of self-discovery, resilience, and defiance against societal norms.
Opening with ‘Gimme Gimme’ from Thoroughly Modern Millie, Eloise delivered a commanding performance, demonstrating both technical ability and emotional depth. Having dedicated significant time to refining this piece as part of her Grade 8 exam repertoire, she imbued it with a sense of empowerment, her voice soaring with clarity and conviction. The number’s grand, jazz-inflected style allowed her to display impressive vocal control and dynamic intensity, setting the tone for the recital.
A shift in mood followed with ‘Green Finch and Linnet Bird’ from Sweeney Todd, a song Eloise previously performed as Johanna in the school’s recent production. Her familiarity with the role lent authenticity to her interpretation, and she navigated the piece’s delicate, classical phrasing with a newfound confidence. Eloise’s effortless command of the upper range, once outside her comfort zone, was particularly striking, as she conveyed Johanna’s yearning and isolation with poignancy.
From the soaring heights of Sondheim’s score, she moved to the haunting beauty of ‘With You’ from Ghost. This deeply emotive ballad showcased Eloise’s ability to transition seamlessly from breathy vulnerability to a powerful, resonant strength. Her sensitive interpretation mirrored the character’s grief and resilience, drawing the audience into the depths of the song’s raw emotion.
The programme continued with ‘My Days’ from The Notebook, a piece that allowed Eloise to explore the full scope of her vocal range. Her rich lower tones and well-developed belting technique were on full display, bringing a depth of expression to the song’s themes of love and self-empowerment.
Concluding the recital on a lighter note, Taylor the Latte Boy by Marcy Heisler and Zina Goldrich provided a delightful contrast. Eloise’s natural comedic timing and engaging stage presence made this witty, charming number an audience favourite. Her ability to connect with listeners through humour and characterisation demonstrated not only her vocal talent but also her dramatic flair.
Throughout the recital, Eloise’s thoughtful programming and expressive delivery highlighted her deep understanding of each character’s journey. Her ability to inhabit such a range of roles, from the heartfelt to the humorous, reinforced her remarkable talent as a musical theatre performer.
Our next Music at Lunchtime recital we will be returning to All Saint’s Church, on Wednesday 23 April 2025, and feature Mr Steve Foster performing a recital of music for trumpet.
