Oakham School Welcomes Gap Students

23rd February 2024

The Oakham School community is delighted to welcome four new Gap students, who will spend the year helping with all aspects of School life, in particular in the Lower School and Sports Department.

We caught up with Amelia, Jack, Sam, and Sophia to find out a bit more about them – where they are from, their first impressions of Oakham, their interests, and what they are looking forward to experiencing this year.

Tell us a bit about where you are from.

Amelia: I’m from the northern beaches of Sydney, which gives me the best of both worlds – easy access to the city and the beach.

Jack: I’m from Willoughby, which is 15 minutes from Sydney city centre.

Sam: I’m from Mosman, which is 15 minutes over the bridge to get into Sydney city centre.

Sophia: I’m from Arcadia, a semi-rural area of Sydney, around 40 minutes from the city centre.

What are your impressions of Oakham School so far?

Amelia: The facilities and sports fields are incredible and I feel lucky to be able to go to work here every day.

Jack: Everyone is very friendly and welcoming. Oakham is a big school with lots of similarities to my old school: Shore. For example, the Shore motto is ‘Vitai lampada tradunt’ (pass the torch) and the boarding house I was in was called Hodges, just like in Lower School boarding.

Sam: So far Oakham has provided me with a very positive outlook on both the pupils and members of staff, which have allowed me to grasp a deeper understanding of this wonderful school.

Sophia: I think Oakham is an incredible school with a lovely, supportive community of staff and students and there is an impressive dedication to everything from pupil wellbeing to sport. The grounds and facilities are amazing in a lovely area.

What are your interests?

Amelia: Sport, music, performing arts, travel.

Jack: I play cricket and rugby, and I enjoy both coaching and playing. I also love travelling and going to new places, so it’s the perfect opportunity for me.

Sam: I enjoy playing a variety of sports like rugby and cricket and am also very much enjoying being involved in the Oakham hockey program.

Sophia: Travel, education, sport.

What are you most looking forward to experiencing this year?

Amelia: The cultures and experiences that will come from exploring and travelling. I am also enjoying the change in location/lifestyle and the chance to experience the English countryside.

Jack: I can’t wait to go travelling around Europe and explore the world. I am also looking forward to the independence this experience will bring me.

Sam: I’m looking forward to becoming more involved in all the sports and activities provided here at Oakham, as well as having the chance to travel during the summer.

Sophia: I’m looking forward to travelling to as many countries as possible.
