Congratulations to Toby, one of our Form 6 pupils, on his commendation from the Tower Poetry Competition for his entry, A Tree.
Now in its 20th year, the Tower Poetry Competition, organised by Christ Church College, Oxford, is one of Britain’s most prestigious poetry competitions for young people.
This year’s theme for the award was ‘trees’ and Toby’s poem is about a tree he frequently passes near his home. One of the judges, Rebecca Watts, wrote the following in her commendation, “I enjoyed this poem’s quiet confidence – its willingness to observe something quotidian, and to spin music from that observation. I was also impressed by the poet’s engagement with the white space of the page, and the lovely, swinging rhythm in the poem’s central section.”
Toby is an avid literature pupil and writer; in addition to writing poems, he also writes short stories and has set up a Chapmans House book club.
His Housemaster, Mr. Bonanno, said, “Toby is a wonderful young man with a great deal of literary talent – he writes with flair and, most importantly, enjoyment and it comes through in his entry.”
We look forward to following the career of this nascent talent. Well done, Toby!
