School Work Experience: Shaping Future Careers

Student Work Experience

Our Careers Department plays an important role in shaping the futures of our young individuals by offering them support throughout their years at Oakham.

Many of our students in Form 5 and above undertake work experience placements organised by the Careers Department during the summer holiday, gaining invaluable knowledge and experience in a range of competitive fields.

During the summer of 2023, here’s how some of our pupils spent their time exploring future careers for themselves:

Parliament

Felicia went to Parliament with Caroline Johnson MP where she listened to debates, Prime Minister’s questions and committees. She researched for briefing papers and attended various events. She found the work experience particularly interesting as she would like to study International Relations at university.

Batemans Auctioneers

Sebastian went to Batemans Auctioneers where he valued goods. Took photographs for catalogues, social media pages and prepared items for auction. This is an area that Sebastian would like to pursue so the experience has been of great value to him.

Excellence Physiotherapy

Olivia is thinking of studying Physiotherapy so went to Excellence Physiotherapy where she observed treatments such as acupuncture and shadowed treatments of shoulder and knee injuries. She also learned about the benefits of Pilates and Sports Massages. She said ‘I learned a lot and got a very good impression of the work life of a physiotherapist’.

Leicester Royal Infirmary

Kiril went to the LRI Colorectal Surgery Department where he observed the patients in clinics, understanding different procedures and treatments. He learnt a lot about the different aspects of medicine and how important the communication is between doctors, the team, and patients. Kiril feels the experience has better prepared him for his application and interviews to study medicine at university.

The School works closely with its external partners and contacts, as well as its extensive alumni network, to introduce students to careers and work experience.

If you are an employer and would like to offer one of our students work experience for summer 2024, please contact our Work Experience and Apprenticeship Officer Caroline Atkinson on cla@oakham.rutland.sch.uk.
