The Spanish Department has started their enrichment programme this first half term with a trip to the cinema to see Competencia Oficial (Official Competition), a comedy by Argentinian Directors Gastón Duprat and Mariano Cohn.
Starring firm favourites Penélope Cruz and Antonio Banderas, it tells the story of an aged multimillionaire, Humberto Suárez, whose desire to leave a legacy sees him finance a motion picture directed by eccentric Palme d’Or laureate Lola Cuevas (Cruz). The screenplay is adapted from an award-winning novel Rivalidad (Rivalry), about a man who cannot forgive his brother for killing their parents in a drunk-driving accident. The two brothers are to be played by stage actor Iván Torres and celebrity actor Félix Rivero (Banderas), whose differing methods cause them to clash during rehearsals.
Head of Spanish Mr Cameron Pauls said, “Providing an interesting, at times hilarious, yet alternative view of the A-level and IB Diploma topics of film, celebrities, relationships, society and marginalisation, the film gave Form 6 Hispanists the opportunity to come together through an enjoyable social event.”
