U19 Netball team win a place at the Nationals
The Oakham School U19 Girls’ Netball team is through to the Netball National Schools Finals for seven years running (bar 2021 due to Covid) after finishing runners-up in the Regional Finals.
Despite losing to Rushcliffe, the team beat Ecclesbourne (13-9) and Oundle (10-5). They then triumphed against Robert Smyth (10-9) in the semi-finals securing a place at the Nationals.
“We are very proud of our determination throughout the day and qualifying for Nationals,” said Milly, Captain of the team. “We had some tough games and we all worked hard as a team to produce good-quality netball and secure wins. We had one tough loss, and after that, we regrouped and came back stronger to win against Robert Smyth. A highlight has to be from Evie S winning important interceptions at crucial moments – after previously falling over. Her resilience throughout the day was incredible.”
Head of Netball, Lauren Nicholls, said, “I am proud of the girls. They played well throughout the day, against some tough opposition. They are now looking forward to playing in the Nationals in March.”
Meanwhile, Oakham’s U16 Girls finished as Plate Runners up.
Oakham’s success in consistently reaching the Regional and National Finals is outstanding, helping to give the school an enviable reputation as a centre of excellence for sport. The teams’ continued successes are combined with individual pupil achievements – there are currently nine pupils playing netball at National League level.
