Music at Lunchtime: Voices Shine in a Vivacious Performance

In a delightful recital filled with melody and harmony, two of our accomplished music scholars, Shonali and Sofia, showcased their vocal talents in a captivating lunchtime recital. They opened with three songs by Henry Purcell, starting with the enchanting strains of the duet ‘Let us wander’. Shonali’s first song, ‘If music be the food of love’, captivated the audience with a voice that resonated with emotion and skill. In response, Sofia’s first solo, ‘Music for a while’, demonstrated her deep understanding of the Baroque composer’s intricate melodies in an equally captivating performance.

Moving seamlessly into the realms of German Lieder, the girls’ programme turned to two songs by Franz Schubert, ‘Die Forelle’ and ‘Du bist die Ruh’. Shonali showcased her versatility and command in Schubert’s agile vocal writing, whilst Sofia infused the church with a sense of serenity.

Sofia gave a poignant and emotive performance of her final song, the soulful ‘Can’t help lovin’ dat man’ from Showboat. The recital reached its climax as Shonali delivered a captivating rendition of ‘I feel pretty’ from West Side Story, demonstrating her ability to connect with the timeless tunes of Broadway.

Congratulations to both girls for an excellent recital that was enjoyed by a packed audience in All Saints’ Church.

Next week’s ‘Music at Lunchtime’ concert will be a piano solo recital performed by Form 5 pupil Grace Lai.
