In celebration of World Poetry Day (21 March), Oakham School invited local primary schools to take part in a poetry competition.
English Martyrs Catholic Voluntary Academy and Oakham C of E Primary School both submitted poems from their Year 5 and 6 pupils.
Using the theme of ‘refuge’ for inspiration, the poems wowed the judges in the English department, with the winning entries now set to be included in Oakham’s Refugee Poetry Anthology.
All of the pupils who took part were presented with a certificate and each of the winners (Nate from Oakham C of E and Bethany and Micaiah from English Martyrs) received a £20 book token.
Dr Emma Reddy, Second in English at Oakham School, visited English Martyrs Catholic Voluntary Academy to present them with Book Tokens as their prizes. She said: “It was a delight to read these poems which, across the board, were rich with images of nature and wide-ranging vocabulary.”
“Micaiah’s poem Longing for a Friend had a really effective structure in which the use of alliteration and repetition created a forceful rhythm.”
“Bethany’s poem Coming to the Forest was a beautiful descriptive poem with a clever rhyme scheme; her effective adjectives depicted the forest scene in a really imaginative way.”
